Musical Achievements:

Growing up in a musical family, Julia began learning piano at a very young age from her mother. The piano has always played a central role in her life, from playing to performing and eventually teaching. As a student of Lucy Portnov, Julia participated and placed for several years in the Young Artist Piano Competition at Westfield State University as well as the New England Music Festival Championship both individually and alongside her brother in duet divisions. Julia participated in every available musical ensemble in high school and was willing to try new things when the piano was not an option; she gained recognition for accompanying school musicals and masses on the piano, singing in the chorus, playing the xylophone & marimba in the drumline and the bass drum in the marching band. In her junior year of high school, she began to teach her own students. Julia plans to graduate from Our Lady of the Elms College in the Spring of 2018 with a minor in Music, supplementing her education as an instructor with a certification in Music Performance from Holyoke Community College.

Approach to Teaching:

Learning to play an instrument gives you a new way to share a part of yourself with others. My goal as a teacher is to share my love of music while teaching a skill that provides students with the ability to do the same. I encourage students to communicate their goals and interests in order to make each individual learning experience purposeful, rewarding and unique.
