Summer Break or Summer Breakthrough? Why You Should Continue Music Lessons in Summer
Why You Should Continue Music Lessons in Summer

Summer will be here soon, and with it comes warm days in the sun, swimming, boating, family trips, BBQs, and time off from the hectic school year. Children and adults look forward to the summer months all year long. Many music students and their parents ask, “Should we take a summer break from music lessons?”
Summer is actually the BEST time for lessons!

Avoid the “Summer Slide”
Ever notice how that song that was easy to play in June suddenly feels tricky again in September? That’s called the “summer slide.” Skills fade quickly without regular practice. Even a few weeks off can weaken muscle memory, technique, and music reading skills. These are the skills that students dedicate so much time and energy to developing during the school year. Summer lessons help students avoid the “summer slide.” Teachers keep students progressing by introducing new, fun, and interesting music to practice during the summer months. Lessons also keep the brain active while building focus and discipline.

Progress Doesn’t Just Pause; It Reverses
Music isn’t like riding a bike. It’s more like going to the gym. If you stop, you lose strength and ability. Lesson breaks do not just stop growth; they can set students back. Students often need to relearn concepts, skills, and lesson material from the previous months when they return in the fall. Some students lose momentum and confidence, which can be hard to regain. This can be frustrating for both students and their parents, who have invested time and effort into their lessons.

Summer Is a HUGE Opportunity for Growth
What takes months to learn during the school year can click in just a few weeks over the summer. With more free time and less school stress, students are able to focus more during lessons and practice. With less homework and more flexible schedules, real breakthroughs can happen. When students continue lessons through the summer, they start September already ahead. There is no “catch-up” period. They are ready for exciting performances, ensembles, and competitions right away.

Summer Is the Time to Try FUN Things
Summer lessons are where music gets FUN again! This is the perfect time to:
● Learn favorite songs
● Try a new instrument or style like jazz or pop
● Explore composing or improvising
● Join a group or band
Being part of group classes and ensembles builds excitement and motivation. Students can even perform at summer picnics, parties, and local events, sharing their music with family and friends.

Keep the Music Going
Don’t let your instrument collect more dust than your beach chair this summer! Stay in lessons and enjoy Finding Your Sound!
